There’s no documented name on who developed the game but popular belief will tell that Greg “Fossilman” Raymer created and popularized the variations of Chinese poker. Raymer is one of the legendary Poker players that have made a living for himself playing poker. Although professionally a lawyer, he dedicated his time to poker after winning a series of tournaments in 2004.

The variation of the 17 card Chinese poker version started when Raymer became addicted to the game of Badugi. Badugi is also a poker variation where the objective of the game is to have the lowest card possible with different variations. Raymer got really into it that he was though to develop this new variation of card game.

To play the 17 card Chinese poker is like playing the standard Chinese poker. The variation starts with the number of players who can join in the game. Using the standard 52-card pack, the game will only be limited to three players. Another variation is the number of card each player will have. There will be 17 cards to be arranged instead of the standard 13 cards.

There will still be standard arrangement of the cards (two sets of five cards and one set of three cards). The extra four cards are usually called the “Badugi Cards”, referring to the game the extra cards is based. Based on Badugi, the player will need to have cards with four different suits to create the lowest card possible. The winning hand that any player could have is A-2-3-4 all in different suits.

The “Badugi Hand” of the game will not affect the arrangement of other hands. The Badugi Hand is independent in its form while other hands in Chinese poker continue to the game. Although the hand is arranged to be part of the middle hand, it will not be based on the front and the middle hand.

If the game will have a “Badugi Hand”, there’s not an immediate win on special hands. The player who has a special hand should still arrange the cards although the player will be entitled with an additional point. The player still has to compete with the remaining cards. The winner of the badugi hand will also be entitled with another point.

As early as the 17 card Chinese poker in popularity, there’s already another variation of the game. Aside from the Badugi Hand, the middle hand will also be the lowest point of the arrangement. It will be a deuce-seven arrangement. When this game is played, it’s almost impossible to get a score for the back part of the game. But since its 17 cards per player, the variation is possible since the middle deuce to seven and the Badugi Hand will just be required to have the lowest cards possible.
